DURHAM, N.C. — A water main break near downtown Durham spewed water several feet into the air Thursday morning.

The water was turned off by 6:30 a.m., but before that a thick plume of water was spraying from a large hole in the ground. The water pressure was so strong that surrounding pavement was breaking and crumbling.

The water main break occurred around 5 a.m. in the 800 block of Dowd Street in front of a house. Crews said that some residents would wake up to no water Thursday morning but weren't sure how many.

The hole in the road will need to be paved. Officials did not have a repair time but said the 1400 and 1300 blocks of North Alston Avenue could be impacted.

As a detour, drivers can avoid Alston Avenue by using Elizabeth Street or a Miami Boulevard. This story will be updated.
