FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Crews responded to a water main break in downtown Fayetteville early Wednesday at the intersection of Russell and Gillespie streets.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area because lanes were closed as crews repaired the main. All lanes were expected to reopen by 5 p.m., officials said.

Public works officials were able to stop the water flow around 6 a.m., and repairs were completed shortly after 1 p.m, officials said.

Officials brought in a backhoe and pump to help with the fix. They hadn't determined the cause of the break.
