Water Main Break Blocks Durham Street

A water main break caused some Durham roads to be icy Thursday night and Friday morning.

DURHAM, N.C. — Freezing temperatures were blamed Friday for a broken water main that caused traffic problems at the corner of Alston and Morning Glory avenues and spilled water to freeze on the streets.

Traffic was rerouted around the scene as city crews worked to fix the 6-inch pipe that broke Thursday night. They had it repaired by 1 p.m., a city spokeswoman said.

There were no reports of any customers losing service because of the break.

Officials were unsure what caused the break, but they said they suspected a combination of freezing temperatures and the drought that has dried soils and caused shifting ground.
