No deal in sight; tensions spike as government shutdown looms

Saturday marks 10 years since the D.C. navy yard shooting when 12 people were killed by a lone gunman. A remembrance ceremony was held Saturday morning outside of the Humphreys building.

Mike Anne, a moment for every life lost the sound of the bell echoing 12 times for each fallen shipmate in front of the very building where they were killed by a lone gunman. 10 years ago. Even in the face of tragedy, thousands returned to work just days later as a family. They would not let fear keep them away. They had a fleet to put to sea. That quote from the former Navy Secretary right after this tragedy still holding a strong significance. Today, healing is a strange thing. You everyone is affected by these events differently. Some people were affected very directly. Others only maybe heard a shotgun blast or just felt the panic of being locked in an office for a couple hours wondering what was going to happen to them. Ultimately, the healing that occurs from something like that happens when you come together. And this morning, 50 family members of the fallen sat together the most at any remembrance ceremony since the tragedy for Lindsay Webster who came face to face with the shooter several times. She wants those here not to be thought of as victims, but survivors making it. So people understand those affected by shootings are survivors and the resiliency that we've had to overcome all of that. She says it's something that they deal with every day of the year. Not just on the anniversary has manifested in my day to day life is everything from putting my back against a wall in a restaurant, to learning how to drive again, to being able to speak with this guy and talk about the organizational resilience and the recovery that we have all done together. Those conversations and reflections many times happening in front of the memorial inside the Humphrey building. It's a little bit more I'd say therapeutic. But the mental health piece of it is something that it's a journey, it's navigating the emotions, navigating the triggers, cultivating that support amongst each other. It happens all the time.

Sixty years ago, in the summer of 1963, a four-story town house on West 130th Street in New York City's Harlem neighborhood became the headquarters for what was then the largest civil rights event in American history, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. For one summer, the house, a former home for "delinquent colored girls," was a hive of activity -- so frenetic that the receptionist twice hung up on Martin Luther King Jr. by mistake.
