WARRENTON, N.C. — Keith Sutton is the new permanent superintendent of Warren County Schools, the district has announced.

That means, by law, he must resign from as the Wake County Board of Education Chairman once he officially moves out of the county and into Warren County, where he will be required to live beginning Jan. 1.

Sutton accepted the interim superintendent position earlier this year, which did not require him to move to Warren County.

The Warren County Board of Education unanimously approved his permanent appointment Monday evening. His contract will run from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2025.

The Wake County school board will vote to appoint a new representative to fill out Sutton’s term, after publicly interviewing applicants from his district, which includes eastern portions of Wake County.

His seat, along with the rest of the board, will be up for election next November.

Sutton’s district is also one of seven that will have to be redrawn based on new Census population data before the next election.

Sutton has served on the board since 2009 and has worked in education consulting and public safety.
