ZEBULON, N.C. — A Zebulon man was so enraged that his girlfriend was receiving text messages from her ex-husband that he repeatedly tried to kill her two weeks ago, according to a search warrant in the case.

Christopher Ryan Griggs, 34, of 2328 Lizard Lick Road, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, interfering with the 911 system and resisting a public officer in the April 5 incident. He remains in the Wake County jail without bond.

According to an application for a warrant to search the house, after Griggs saw a text message on his girlfriend's phone, he choked her until she lost consciousness and then tried to drown her in a bathtub.

Later, he placed the barrel of a gun against her head and threatened to kill her, according to the warrant application. As she pushed the gun away, he fired it.

The woman told investigators that she waited until the following day to call for help because she feared Griggs would kill her and any law enforcement officer who came to the house that night, the warrant application states.

After his arrest, authorities said Griggs barricaded himself inside the home for a while before surrendering.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators seized two 9mm handguns, a shotgun and three rifles, along with ammunition, from inside the home. Although the warrant states that Griggs tried to shoot the woman with an AK-47, one was not listed on the warrant as being among the weapons taken from the home.
