A Raleigh father has been charged in connection with the shooting of his 13-year-old son earlier this month.

Authorities responded to a home in the 5300 block of Big Bass Drive at about 4:30 a.m. on Nov. 4 and took the teen to WakeMed for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The boy was shot in the neck, causing severe spinal and throat injuries, an arrest warrant states.

The arrest warrant says the teen’s father, Kerwin Lydell Downing, “showed a reckless disregard for human life” when he handed the loaded weapon to his son.

"I was getting ready to take my gun upstairs and I pulled it out of the holster," Downing says to a 911 dispatcher.

During the call, he can be heard pleading for help to arrive quickly and telling his son to "stay with me."

Downing, 58, of 5343 Big Bass Drive, was charged with negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.

He was being held at the Wake County Detention Center under $150,000 bond.
