RALEIGH, N.C. — A convicted sex offender was charged with trying to tackle a Wake County sheriff's officer Saturday who was transporting him to another area, according to an arrest warrant.

Donnell Anthony Cain, 30, of 4712 B Matt Drive in Raleigh, was charged with assaulting a government official. He was placed in the Wake County jail under a $5,000 secured bond.

The warrant states that Cain grabbed the officer, put him in a bear hug and tried to take him to the floor.

State Department of Correction records show that Cain was convicted in 1998 of indecent liberties with a minor. He was released from prison in January after serving nearly two years for 2008 convictions for failure to register as a sex offender and common-law robbery.

DOC records show that he also has convictions for felony malicious conduct by a prisoner, larceny and communicating threats.
