Warm weather for Mother's Day after freeze and frost warnings pass

It's still May, though it won't feel like it as we head into Mother's Day.

Posted Updated

Temperatures were cold for Sunday morning, and some parts of the North Carolina mountains even saw snow over the weekend weekend. But Mother's Day will warm up for those looking to spend some time outside outside.

"It will be dry for Mother's Day," meteorologist Zach Maloch said. "It will be beautiful for afternoon plans, but you may want to make mom breakfast in bed because she is not going to want to get out with temperatures so chilly (Sunday) morning."

Expect warmer weather Sunday afternoon in the 70s. It will be a perfect day to go outside, fire up the grill or just relax. But there will be a high UV index Sunday, so don't forget to put on your sunscreen.

The freeze warning ended at Sunday at 8 a.m. for most of the northern half of the WRAL viewing area. The frost advisory is in place for locations east and south of Raleigh also ended this morning.

As the week goes on, temperatures throughout the day could continue to rise. And by next weekend, WRAL's Peta Sherwood said we will have "temperatures flirting with the 90's."

While some places like Michigan and the northeast part of the country got snow, we'll just have cold temperatures before a warming trend follows.

Places like Roxboro and areas of southern central Virginia saw temperatures in the low 30s. Further south, Fayetteville saw temperatures in the 30s. It has a record low for Sunday morning of 39.

After a cold start, temps reach 60 by lunch and into the upper 60s by the middle of the day Sunday.

After that, Maloch said there's a small chance of showers around 6 a.m. on Monday. Next, we're in store for several dry days as the temperatures climb to as high as the upper 80s by next Saturday.

"Believe it or not, (early Monday) is our best chance of rain over the next seven days as we're going to have a long period of dry weather, plenty of sunshine but we are also going to see temperatures starkly different next week," Maloch said.
