War is Hell

Posted Updated

Just as I was entering church Sunday, someone mentioned to me the news that Bob Woodrfuff of ABC was seriosuly injured in an Iraqi roadside bombing. While I don't know Bob all that well, we spent considerable time together on the 2004 campaign trail. Family man, happily married, four children, smart with a passion for journalistic fairness and accuracy. Throughout the service, I couldn't get him and his family off my mind. I realized when we knew someone who has come under attack, the war looks different.

Then the lightening bolt. What about every member of the U.S. armed forces who has been injured or killed? They, too, have families and friends who know them. And what about the Iraqis? Again, families and friends.

All in this war are sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, friends.

Take a deep breath. Think about the loss. Exhale.

War is hell.
