As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic scuttles the usual summer plans for many families, Walmart is here to help.

The big box chain announced two new experiences for families - Camp by Walmart, a free "star-studded" virtual camp, and a touring drive-in movie theater that will turn Walmart parking lots into outdoor cinemas.

“Summer hasn’t really felt like summer yet, and I know I hear every day, ‘Mom, I’m bored!’” said Janey Whiteside, chief customer officer at Walmart, in a press release. “Through our digital means and vast footprint of stores, we’re hoping to bring some summer fun to families across the country. We know Walmart plays a role in our communities that extends far beyond getting them necessary supplies, and we see that now more than ever.”

Camp by Walmart will feature Drew Barrymore, Neil Patrick Harris, LeBron James, Idina Menzel and Todd Oldham as "camp counselors" who will lead kids through arts and crafts, fitness activities and other pastimes to keep them entertained,

Starting this week, 50 Camp by Walmart activities are available for free via the Walmart app. By the end of the summer, Walmart will roll about 200 more new activities.

They include, according to the press release:

  • “The Great Family Challenge,” which features various family-bonding activities, including actress Drew Barrymore taking campers through a make-up tutorial and basketball star LeBron James leading participants through mental and physical activities with help from his I PROMISE School educators.
  • A morning kick-off with Head Camp Counselor, actor Neil Patrick Harris, who sends families through one of 14 camp challenges, from “Neil’s Charades” to musical Mad Libs.
  • “Skills Camp” is a talent show which features experts teaching new skills, like singer and actress Idina Menzel, who showcases her singing skills to campers.
  • And, designer Todd Oldham reimagines “Smarts and Crafts,” which teaches campers about creativity through the lens of arts, crafts and fashion.

To access Camp by Walmart, according to the release, customers can download the Walmart app, or update their existing Walmart app, and look for Camp by Walmart in the app’s Services tab from the bottom navigation.

Going forward, Walmart is working on plans to transform 160 store parking lots for two drive-in experiences. Starting in August, Walmart will begin rolling out the series and plans 320 total showings. The family-friendly night will include hit movies and special appearances from filmmakers and celebrities. Ahead of each screening, according to the press release, families can order their "drive-in essentials" online for curbside pickup on the way to their movie. Walmart is partnering with Tribeca Enterprises on the movie series.

The locations of the drive-in movies have not been announced. WalmartDrive-In.com will have the latest.
