WakeMed receives first shipment of Pfizer's vaccine
On Thursday, WakeMed received its first shipment of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine.
Posted — UpdatedWakeMed got 3,900 doses to be split between the Cary hospital and the main hospital on New Bern Avenue.
According to officials, Raleigh will receive 2,925 doses, and Cary will receive 975. The first shipment will vaccinate about one-third of WakeMed's 11,000 employees.
The vaccines will be distributed similar to a lottery system. Each employee has a number, and when it's called, they can get the vaccine, decline it or request more information.
Anyone who is vaccinated will remain in a conference room for one hour of monitoring, WakeMed said. The vaccines will be distributed to employees who work with COVID-19 patients, which includes not just doctors and nurses but support staff, including technicians and food service workers.
Dr. Chris DeRienzo, the chief medical officer at WakeMed Health, said the hospital will keep clinics staffed and open until all staff members who want the vaccine get their two doses.
More than 50 hospitals across North Carolina are expecting vaccines to arrive this week.
