RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake County will lower all North Carolina flags at county buildings to half-staff in honor of former Sheriff John Baker Jr., who died Wednesday, officials said.

Baker served as sheriff from 1978 to 2002.

"Sheriff Baker was a great man and a great leader. He gave Wake County the best years of his life, and all our citizens are indebted to him. Sheriff Baker's compassion and leadership will never be forgotten," Tony Gurley, chairman of the county Board of Commissioners, said in a statement.

All flags will be flown at half-staff for a week, beginning at noon Thursday, officials said. The flag flying in front of the Wake County Courthouse will be given to Baker's family at the end of the memorial, officials said.
