WENDELL, N.C. — Wake Tech has started clearing land for a new campus in Eastern Wake County – making space to train more people to join that workforce.

The construction site runs along the I-87/Hwy 64 corridor in Wendell.

School leaders say it'll become a training facility for a number of industries – specifically public safety and cutting-edge technology.

The vision: A 106-acre space leaders are calling ‘Eastern Wake 4.0’

The name reflects the college’s dedication to look to the future—building high-tech facilities to support biopharmaceutical technology and smart manufacturing.

This construction site also set to house a public safety simulation complex-giving students training in programs like law enforcement and serve as home to Wake Tech’s EMS program.

Phase one construction is underway and will take place through 2025.

With Wake Tech campuses in every corner of Wake County, the eastern portion is an area the president wants to make a presence.

"Being able to have an impact on the educational opportunities, more opportunities for folks to go beyond high school right there in that region," says Dr. Scott Ralls, President, Wake Tech Community College. "And the job opportunities, economic opportunities -- that’s our reason for being there in eastern Wake County."

The construction site is just down the road from East Wake High School. Ralls says he’s looking forward to partnerships with the Wake School system to open students up to these industries.

Ralls says the first building should be open for classes in 2024.
