NEW HILL, N.C. — A Cameron man shot and killed his friend Friday night during an argument while looking for a lost cell phone, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office.

Stephen Craig Oakley, 21, has been charged with murder after officials say he shot his friend around 11 p.m. along U.S. Route 1.

Wake County Investigators have charged Stephen Craig Oakley, age 21, with one count of murder.

Oakley and four other friends were driving near Church Street and New Hill Holleman Road when Oakley realized he had lost his phone. The group of friends pulled over on the side of the road so that Oakley could find his phone, authorities said.

While looking for Oakley's phone, an argument began between Oakley and Dallas Richard Childress, 24, also from Cameron.

Oakley told investigators he fired a shot inside the vehicle which ended up killing Childress, according to the sheriff's office.

He's currently being held at the Wake County Dentention Center without bond.
