Wake school enrollment up 3 percent

Enrollment in Wake County public schools increased 3.3 percent Monday from the first day of the 2007-08 school year, officials said. Tuesday.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Enrollment in Wake County public schools increased 3.3 percent Monday from the first day of the 2007-08 school year, officials said. Tuesday.

According to district officials, 131,621 students attended the first day of school Monday, compared with 127,352 a year ago.

Officials said they expect about another 8,000 students by the 20th day of class, when the official enrollment is tallied. Projections call for the district's enrollment to reach 139,247 by then.

The first-day figures included 65,270 elementary students, 29,502 middle school students, 36,591 high school students and 258 other students, officials said.
