Wake school board chair anxious to hear what's next from Gov. Cooper
WRAL's Kirsten Gutierrez spoke with the head of the Wake County Schools board to hear what he is hoping Gov. Cooper will say on Friday regarding schools in the state during the coronavirus outbreak.
THE GOVERNOR WILL MAKE A DECISION ABOUT SCHOOLS TOMORROW. SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED UNTIL MAY 15. >> WE ARE IN THIS FOR SOME TIME TO COME. >> THE GOVERNOR SAID HE WILL SHARE HIS PLAN FOR SCHOOLS TOMORROW. KINSTON SPOKE WITH THE WAKE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD ABOUT WHAT HE WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN THE PLAN. SHE JOINS US ALIVE.>> Reporter: HE WASN'T SURPRISED BY THE GOVERNOR'S ANNOUNCEMENT TODAY BUT HE TELLS US THAT HE EXPECTS THE GOVERNOR TO MAKE A BIG DECISION ON EDUCATION TOMORROW. DURING THE PRESS CONFERENCE, GOVERNOR ROY COOPER SAID HE WILL HAVE EDUCATION LEADERS DISCUSS PLANS ON HOW THE STATE EXPECTS TO MOVE FORWARD. CURRENTLY SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED TO STUDENTS AND STAFF UNTIL MAY 15. SON SAYS HE IS ANTICIPATING THE GOVERNOR WILL DELAY REOPENING SCHOOLS OR CANCEL SCHOOLS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE CALENDAR YEAR. SON SAYS THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS PREPARED AND THE SAFETY OF THOSE THEY SERVE COME FIRST. >> WANT TO MAKE SURE WE ARE KEEPING OUR EMPLOYEES AND STUDENTS AND FAMILY SAFE SO THAT IS THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. WE WILL BE PREPARED TO CONTINUE LEARNING AND CONTINUE MOVING ALONG MAKING SURE THAT STUDENTS HAVE BEEN EDUCATED. >> JUST LAST WEEK, THE DOCTOR SAID CERTAIN CRITERIA NEEDED TO HAPPEN BEFORE OPENING SCHOOL DOORS. TOMORROW MORNING, THE WAKE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM IS HOSTING ITS WEEKLY UPDATE AT 10 AM.
