WAKE FOREST, N.C. — A Wake Forest police office was fired last month amid a state child pornography investigation, officials said Monday.

The State Bureau of Investigation notified the Wake Forest Police Department on Jan. 10 that Cpl. Alex Sims, 35, was under investigation, and the department immediately put him on administrative leave, officials said.

Three days later, after an internal investigation, the department fired him, officials said.

According to Sims' termination notice, he admitted to watching child porn on a social media site, as well as viewing bestiality images online. Officials also noted that he lied to investigators regarding a phony online profile he used on the sites and that he failed to notify his superiors he was under investigation.

Sims surrendered to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office on Thursday and was charged with two counts of second-degree exploitation of a minor.

He had worked for the Wake Forest Police Department since April 2013.
