Wake Forest, N.C. — A young Wake Forest girl has returned home to the Triangle and was recovering Sunday after she was bitten last week while playing in the water off the coast of Myrtle Beach.
Peyton Force, 11, and her family believe she was attacked by a shark during her outing in the ocean on July 2.
Fire crews in South Carolina described the incident near Pier 14 as an "aquatic animal incident."
The girl was in the water with her dad when she said she felt what she described as a deep shock into her leg.
Peyton's father, David Force, said he saw a fin in the water shortly after hearing his daughter scream. Emergency crews treated Peyton at the scene after she was pulled from the ocean water.
The girl is recovering, and is walking although with the help of crutches. She spent much of Sunday outside by a pool, refusing to let the incident get her down.
"She didn't cry," said David Force. "She was making jokes and calling relatives saying, 'I got bit by a shark.'"
