WAKE FOREST, N.C. — A Wake Forest family gathered anxiously Saturday as they awaited word from their sister in the Philippines.

Judith de la Cruz and her siblings said it had been more than 48 hours since they last heard from their sister, Sharon Abrera.

Abrera moved to her native Philippines one year ago with her husband and four children.

She and her family were there while Typhoon Haiyan wreaked havoc Saturday.

"If the storm surge got into our town there is a very good possibility that it could have gone as high as the house," De la Cruz said.

De la Cruz spoke to her sister on Thursday, but has not heard from her since.

"There is a good possibility they could have survived, but then again with the news that we have gotten, and we don't know how reliable it is, but they said there are some causalities. Not some, but a lot. We are really concerned," she said.
