Raleigh, N.C. — A Wake County Sheriff’s Office deputy thwarted an attempt to steal more than two dozen guns from an area gun shop early Monday.
An alert about a possible break-in at Smokin’ Barrel Guns and Ammo, at 4811 Fayetteville Road, was forwarded by 911 to deputies shortly after 2 a.m., authorities said.
The first deputy to arrive at the scene saw someone trying to exit the front door of the gun store, and as the deputy moved in to make an arrest, the person ran back inside and later escaped through a side window and fled, authorities said.
About 25 guns were found inside the shop that investigators believe would have been taken if the deputy hadn't stopped the crime.
The case remains under investigation.
