RALEIGH, N.C. — When three men suspected of shoplifting ran from a Raleigh Walmart, an off-duty Wake County deputy gave chase, capturing one of them and discovering he carried a gun.

Walmart employees were holding the three men on suspicion of shoplifting and asked the deputy to help question them. The three took off, but the deputy was able to catch Justin Collins, 22, of Maryland. A search of Collins' fanny pack turned up two weapons.

Collins is charged with one count of larceny, one count of carrying a concealed weapon and resist, obstruct and delay, and he was booked into the Wake County Detention Center.

The incident happened just after 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Walmart Supercenter on New Hope Church Road.

“The deputy’s quick action may have prevented a potentially dangerous situation for Walmart employees and customers,” said Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker. “This incident is a perfect example why the Wake County Sheriff’s Office continues to provide important tools and training for our deputies to ensure they are always prepared to handle any potentially dangerous call.”
