RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said Thursday that four Wake County deputies were justified in killing a man who tried to run over one of them with a car and later pointed a gun at them.
Deputies R.M. Fleer, J.M. Muniz Jr., M.M. Fontana and P.J. Anastasi responded twice to 8001 Caddy Road on the night of Aug. 31 regarding threats made by Troy Thompson against another resident of the property. On the second trip, they found Thompson in the driver's seat of a sedan, and he ignored their commands to get out of the car and instead drove erratically on the wooded property for about 20 minutes, Freeman said in her summation of the incident.

As one deputy was putting spiked strips along the ground in an effort to disable the car, Thompson tried to back up over him, Freeman said. Deputies also tried pepper spray, tear gas and a flash-bang grenade to get Thompson to stop and exit the car but were unsuccessful.

Thompson then grabbed a handgun from the passenger seat and pointed it at the deputies, Freeman said.

"Multiple deputies called out 'gun, gun' prior to firing at Thompson," Freeman said. "Thompson was struck twice in the head, resulting in his death."

Investigators found a loaded .25-caliber handgun and one .25-caliber shell casing inside the car.

Tests later showed that Thompson had "multiple controlled substances in his system" during the incident, Freeman said.
