On April 1, Wake County employees will begin inspecting 1,300 swimming pools before swim season kicks off this spring and summer.

Inspectors each year make sure pools are permitted. They also check chlorine and pH levels, make sure emergency and safety equipment is accessible and working properly, ensure the pools have proper signage, check for trip hazards on the pool deck and examine pool pump and suction covers.

"This is a massive undertaking for our staff, but we know how critically important it is to make sure every public pool is meeting safety standards to protect our families," said Wake County Commissioner Donald Mial.

The inspectors only visit public pools, including those at community centers, gyms, hotels and in neighborhoods, making sure "that every pool is permitted and ready for a safe and enjoyable season."

Pool owners hoping to open by Memorial Day -- May 29 -- are asked to schedule a pool inspection immediately.

"If you follow our checklist in advance and are prepared for the inspection, it can take as little as an hour and you'll be set to open or give yourself time to correct any issues," said Jessica Sanders, Recreational Sanitation Program Manager.

WRAL Family has a database of public pools and spraygrounds, excluding those in neighborhoods dedicated for residents and visitors only.
