The Wake County Sheriff's Office has charged a man with murder in the death of Robert William Barton Wednesday morning. 

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — The Wake County Sheriff's Office has charged a man with murder in the death of Robert William Barton Wednesday morning.

Officers responded to the 8200 block of Fieldcrest Lane in Fuquay-Varina for a report of a shooting around 9:25 a.m.

Upon arrival, they found Barton with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police radio traffic indicated that the situation involved a tenant and a landlord.

"The suspect was described as a man wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

He was standing outside with his phone in his hand and was not armed.

A gun was reportedly on the kitchen counter." - Police Radio Traffic.

Jeffrey Hoffman, 63, has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of Barton, 49.

Hoffman and Barton appeared in court in June.

Documents show that Barton was accused of failing to pay rent of $500 in June. The case was dismissed.

Hoffman is in custody and being processed at the Wake County Detention Center.
