KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — Knightdale High School was pretty busy for a Saturday, but people weren't going to class they were there for a job.

“We had a really good rush of people,” said Jason Kennedy, director of talent acquisition at Wake County Schools.

Select schools in the district were invited.

“Some of our low-performing schools, some of our title one schools, that we wanted to give first dibs on the talent coming out,” said Kennedy. “We are always looking for good teachers.”

Yvonne Wynn could be one of them.

“They provide great resources and the support is just fabulous,” said Wynn.

She and others told WRAL News the size of the district is a big selling point. Pay is also better than in other counties in the state.

Stacey Alston, principal at East Wake High, has seven vacancies to fill.

“Compensation is always on the forefront,” said Alston.

He’s not wasting any time.

“Today, I offered an early contract to someone and they are on the hook to be teaching at East Wake next year,” said Alston.

Across the district, Wake County has about 300 teacher vacancies to fill. That is about 2 and a half percent of their teaching positions.

Around 700 signed up to attend the job fair both in-person and virtually.

“We are excited by the numbers that we got,” said Kennedy

A district-wide job fair is planned for april 23rd.

The need is greatest for teachers in special education, math and science.
