Wake County Is Largest School District in State, for Now
For the first time, Wake numbers were larger than Mecklenburg County. The latest enrollment numbers show Wake has more than 133,000 students. Mecklenburg County has just over 131,000 students.

For the first time, Wake numbers were larger than Mecklenburg County. The latest enrollment numbers show Wake has more than 133,000 students. Mecklenburg County has just over 131,000 students.
Those numbers could increase as the schools prepare to release the final 20-day enrollment numbers.
As for the county, new estimates show 817,000 residents. That's expected to keep growing and to hit 1 million by 2013.
