RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake County will host another walk-in flu clinic Wednesday between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the Public Health Center at 10 Sunnybrook Road.

The clinic repeats at the same time, same place each week and offers both flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Medical experts, including UNC Health's Dr. David Wohl, say it's okay to get both at the same time.

"You might have two sore arms instead of one sore arm, you might be a little more achy the next day, but no harm done and good data that shows that it works," Wohl said, adding that it's also okay to get a booster before, after or at the same time as the flu shot.

Everyone is encouraged to get flu shot this year and to get it as soon as possible, especially since masks and social distancing requirements won't be in place like last year. Last year, only seven people were known to die of the flu in North Carolina, and overall infection rates were low because people were staying home.

No appointments are necessary to get the flu shot, and walk-ins are welcome. People who want a COVID-19 vaccine will need to register online.

There is no charge for the flu shot for uninsured pregnant women or children under 19 who qualify for the Vaccines for Children Program.

The cost for the flu vaccine for all other adults is $30, but Wake County Public Health can bill insurance providers. Flu shots are also available at most grocery stories, pharmacies and doctor's offices.

Other upcoming Wake County flu clinics at the Sunnybrook building include Nov. 3, 10 and 17.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a yearly flu shot for everyone over 6 months of age, especially young children, adults 65 and older, frontline workers, caregivers, first responders and people with underlying health conditions.
