RALEIGH, N.C. — A walk-in flu clinic will be held Wednesdays between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the Public Health Center at 10 Sunnybrook Road.

Last year, only seven people were known to die of the flu in North Carolina. Overall infection rates were low, largely because people were wearing masks, social distancing and staying home.

Doctors are concerned this year's flu season could be worse and say the risk of getting the flu is greater this year, especially with businesses and schools open.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a yearly flu shot for just about everyone over 6 months of age, especially young children, adults 65 and older, frontline workers, caregivers, first responders and people with underlying health conditions.

The site will also offer COVID-19 vaccines on Wednesday. You can get vaccinated against COVID-19 at the same time, but an appointment is needed for COVID-19 shots and boosters.

There is no charge for the flu shot for uninsured pregnant women or children under 19 who qualify for the Vaccines for Children Program.

The cost for the flu vaccine for all other adults is $30, but Wake County Public Health can bill insurance providers. Flu shots are also available at most grocery stories, pharmacies and doctor's offices.

Other upcoming Wake County flu clinics at the Sunnybrook building include Oct. 13, 20 and 27 and Nov. 3, 10 and 17.
