RALEIGH, N.C. — Saying he expects to move out of state in the next year or so, Wake County Board of Commissioners Chairman Greg Ford said Friday that he is ending his re-election campaign.

"This was not an easy decision to make. But I know in my heart that it is the right decision for my family – and for Wake County," Ford said in a Facebook post announcing the move.

Ford was to have faced Republican Karen Weathers for the District 6 seat on the board in November. He said his withdrawal will allow the Wake County Democratic Party to name another candidate to appear on the November ballot instead.

A former teacher and school administrator, he has served on the Board of Commissioners since 2016. He said he plans to serve the remainder of his term, which expires in December.

"I am forever grateful for the trust and support of this wonderful community, and I look forward to continuing my service to Wake County as we navigate this period of profound change together," he said.
