Wake County Sheriff's Office investigating after viral video of child left alone in car

A man recorded the moments he discovered the child, started searching for the adult responsible then asked someone to call 911. The sheriff’s office is investigating the video and trying to track down the woman and the child.

“Never in a million years expected to see what I saw," said Macon Jones.

Jones showed WRAL News what he captured on video. He said he was looking for car parts on Monday, walking through the parking lot of an auto parts business off U.S. Highway 70.

"I was like 'Oh, that must be one of those high school babies, fake doll," Jones said. "I just knew that this is not real for it to be a human."

Once he realized it was a child, Jones said he told a man standing by to call 911 and started rolling his camera.

"Hey little buddy, you OK? Where are your people at?" Jones says on the video.

Jones thought the child’s parents may be nearby and forgot her in the car.

"My truck was showing 86, 87 (degrees)," Jones said. "I knew that I was on a time limit, and if I didn’t see nobody, if nobody was going to claim the baby, I was going on my way back to put the baby in a safe environment."

Jones said he found the woman responsible for the child, who appeared to have intentionally left the child in the car.

"When she showed me her 'so what-type attitude,' it went to second gear," Jones said. "'I'm getting this baby out of the car."

Jones said the woman followed after him. You can hear her tell him she had a battery with battery acid on it and she didn’t want to touch the child.

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office said they were made aware of the incident through the video. They are investigating and trying to gather more information. Jones is facing some backlash online for recording what happened.

"I did what I thought was best at the time," Jones said. "I won’t have closure till I know the baby is OK."

While people have speculated about who the woman is, WRAL has been unable to reach her for comment. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office did not to release her identity while they continue the investigation.
