School bus driver Donovan Patrick has been behind the wheel of Wake County buses for almost nine years. He loves the job and knows the stakes are high.

"We just wanna make sure these kids get on the bus safely and get off the bus safely," he said. "We're here to protect them, we're here to ensure that they're safe."

This year, additional protocol is in place to make sure children are safe on the bus as the Delta variant spreads.

Kids and parents should be ready for:

  • Mask requirements at bus stops and on school buses
  • Social distancing and assigned seating on buses (siblings can sit together)
  • Disinfecting of buses after each route

Parents in Wake, Durham and Johnston County can track their child's bus with the Here Comes the Bus app. After downloading, parents need to get an access code from their child's school.

Wake County Schools will also provide extra help to young students. Elementary bus riders will have an ID tag on their book bag to ensure they're getting on the right bus.
