Wake board caps enrollment at 19 schools

The Wake County Board of Education voted Tuesday to cap enrollment at 19 schools to prevent further overcrowding and to help reduce K-3 class sizes.

CARY, N.C. — The Wake County Board of Education voted Tuesday to cap enrollment at 19 schools to prevent further overcrowding and to help reduce K-3 class sizes.

The schools that are capped are:

  • Abbotts Creek Elementary
  • Alston Ridge Elementary
  • Beaverdam Elementary
  • Cedar Fork Elementary
  • Combs Elementary
  • Highcroft Drive Elementary
  • Holly Grove Elementary
  • Hortons Creek Elementary
  • Lead Mine Elementary
  • Mills Park Elementary
  • Oakview Elementary
  • Olive Chapel Elementary
  • Rogers Lane Elementary
  • Scotts Ridge Elementary
  • Sycamore Creek Elementary
  • Weatherstone Elementary
  • White Oak Elementary (K-1 only)
  • Mills Park Middle
  • Heritage High

The board considered removing the cap at Panther Creek High School but wanted more time to consider the change. Board members also discussed the financial implications of capping schools. With the caps in place, the district will need to buy five more buses, costing an additional $200,000 per year.
