RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County Sheriff's Office is investigating a suicide that happened at the county detention center over the weekend.

Sheriff Donnie Harrison said Monday that Steven Hope, 28, was found hanging from a bed sheet from an air vent around 5:55 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Hope had not been exhibiting any unusual behavior prior to his death, Harrison said, and there was no reason for him to have been on suicide watch.

He had been checked on twice in the previous hour and had finished eating dinner before being discovered on a routine check, Harrison said.

The Wake County District Attorney's Office will also review the case after the sheriff's office's investigation is complete.

Hope was arrested Friday on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in Vance County court on an underage drinking charge from 2002. He was also a fugitive from justice on a larceny charge out of Virginia.

Harrison also said Hope had been taken to WakeMed Saturday afternoon after passing out and cutting his head in his jail cell.
