RALEIGH, N.C. — Volunteers were out in force Friday morning to help honor veterans buried at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.

This past weekend, cemetery workers and volunteers put 350 wreaths at the graves of veterans in Oakwood's field of honor as part of National Wreaths Across America day.

Three days later, after word of the weekend work got out, the cemetery received a donation of 1,500 more wreaths to honor all the veterans buried in Oakwood.

Robin Simonton, the executive director of the cemetery, said she was speechless when she got a phone call about the wreath donation.

"I was shocked and so honored that they thought of us and the veterans at Oakwood," she said.

Staff and volunteers began placing wreaths at 9 a.m.
