FORT MYERS, FLA. — "Total devastation."

That's how Fort Myers officials have described the damage Hurricane Ian unleashed on their community.

They said the storm has left thousands without power or drinking water.

But help is on the way.

Terry Hall with the NC chapter of Baptists on Mission said dozens of volunteers are on their way to nearby Cape Coral, Florida.

"Right now we’re in the process of setting up everything, our kitchen," said Hall. "We’ve been asked to prepare 30,000 meals a day starting tomorrow."

They'll spend their days preparing meals provided by the red cross as well as helping families in need clear the wreckage from their homes.

"We’re a faith-based organization, and we’re the hands and feet of God," said Hall. "We go where the good Lord needs us to go to help hurting people. And down here there are a lot of hurting people."

Project leaders said they've been told it could be weeks before utilities in Fort Myers are back online.

Until then, they plan to bridge the gap as best as they can.

"We’re here to give them two hot meals a day, just so they can get back to a normal life," said Hall.
