Visit a Scotch Distillery From the Comfort of Grand Central

NEW YORK — The Macallan, one of Scotland’s pre-eminent whiskies, has just opened an enormous new distillery and visitor center in Speyside that took four years and about $186 million to build. It was designed to be green in more ways than one, with a low, undulating, grass-covered roof. Inside, there are 36 copper pot stills, space for 300,000 maturing casks and a library of nearly 1,000 bottles. And to spread the word, the distillery — which was founded in 1824 and is famous for aging its whisky in sherry casks — is setting up a virtual reality view of the new facility in Grand Central Terminal for a few days. Visitors can enter a 15-foot cube, and “visit” the new distillery for nine minutes. And what would the experience be without a nip of Scotch? The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old and the new Edition No. 4 will be available for sampling.
