The latest latest shooting was at a Chapel Ridge an apartment complex that houses many UNC students. It's also close to this bus stop which a lot of students take to class.
Many students say they were shocked to hear it happened so close to campus
“It was a little bit shocking, but not super surprising just because I have heard of shootings happening up the road," said UNC Junior Julia Kalinowska, who came home after a long day at school to find her apartment complex surrounded by yellow tape.
Chapel Hill Police were called to the Chapel Ridge Apartments, where a man was found dead.
“I think we just kind of expect this area to be a little safer because it is a little closer to campus as a student," she said.
Just three days ago police were called to a shooting on Highway 54 after a driver fired shots at another driver’s car. Later that night, police also found a 27-year-old man shot to death on S. Estes Drive.
Today’s incident marks a total of 3 shootings this week, two of them murders -- a violent start to the new year, compared to 6 total shootings and 5 deaths all of 2021.
Zach Clemmons, who lives 7 minutes from campus, was in class when he was notified about the shooting at his complex.
“I generally feel like this is a very safe part of the state in the country. It’s concerning that there are more shootings, but I think we have to put it into perspective where we live. What’s going on," he said.
Not far from the latest shooting – Franklin street – which used to be bustling with activity, now many students are choosing to avoid the area after a serious uptick in crime.
“Our general rule is not to go on Franklin Street by ourselves always go with a friend and don’t go at night we get alerts about people being assaulted so I don’t tend to go by myself there at all,” said Kalinowska.
