CARY, N.C. — Dozens of people held candles and prayed in a Cary church on Monday night as they shared stories of losing someone to gun violence.

The vigil, hosted by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, was among hundreds of events held nationwide to commemorate the anniversary of the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut that killed 20 young children and six staffers.

"I’m not anti-guns, I’m anti-gun violence," said Chantell Felder, whose brother, Loney, was gunned down in Charlotte in June 2015.

"You kind of lose yourself. It’s not a matter of reality until it hits home for you," Felder said. "Holidays are a lot more difficult. Birthdays coming up, that type of thing, are a lot more difficult. But you just have to move forward and know that he or she is still watching over you."

"You probably would be really surprised to know how many survivors there are in your community, or even live in your neighborhood, in your church, at your place of business or whatever," said Stormy Ingold of Moms Demand Action.
