Richard Gatling, who grew up in Hertford County, patented his Gatling gun in 1862 as the country was in the midst of the Civil War, hoping to save lives by reducing the number of people needed on the battlefield. Instead, the rotary gun that can fire up to 800 rounds a minute, made warfare more bloody.
