How butterflies evolved to thrive on milkweed and become 'flying poison'

The caterpillar of the monarch butterfly thrives on milkweed, a poisonous plant that's deadly to many. A team of researchers announced last week they had pinpointed three genetic mutations that allow caterpillars to live off the plant.
