Apex police: SBI agent shoots, kills man in parking lot of Apex sporting goods store

To 11 51 Pine Plaza Drive which is Academy Sports

In reference to an individual who had been shot when

officers arrived on scene

They encountered three individuals that were involved in this incident

There was one male that was on the ground who

had suffered a gunshot wound and there was a female

and another male that were actively involved in an altercation

at the time that officers arrived

The officers broke up that altercation and immediately began rendering

aid to the individual that was suffering from the gunshot

wound

That individual was immediately transported to an area hospital um

where we were informed that that individual did pass away

from the injuries that they sustained from the gunshot wound

We're still active in this investigation

My investigators are still out on the scene right now

still combing through everything that we have out there and

trying to interview witnesses and get more information

What we know at this time is that two individuals

were inside the Academy Sports and those individuals there was

a male and a female and the female allegedly grabbed

some box of ammunition that was sitting on the counter

display and stole that the box of ammunition and ran

out of the store with that box of ammunition

And the male that was with her ran out of

the store with her in the parking lot was an

FBI agent

The FBI agent encountered the two individuals in the parking

lot and that is when the shooting occurred

The FBI agent was the individual that shot the male

in this interaction

What we know there was another weapon that was at

the scene next to the male that was shot and

we believe that that was his weapon

And so we're still sorting through you know if that

weapon was used or how that weapon might have been

used

We still we still don't know that at this time

the female that was with the male that was shot

and deceased that was involved in the shoplifting

She was also taken to an area hospital

She was not shot in this encounter but she was

taken to an area hospital to be checked out and

evaluated as a result of this situation

And so we don't know the identities of those two

individuals

At this time we're still working to sort through all

of that stuff and get them identified and that's really

all that we know at this time about this case

and what happened with it

Um I did reach out and contact the district attorney

Lauren Freeman along with the leadership of the S B

to just make sure that we handled this with the

utmost sensitivity since it was an officer involved shooting

And in speaking with Lauren Freeman she requested that the

Apex Police Department handle the investigation in this case

So it remains separate from the FBI since it did

involve one of their officers

And so the Apex Police Department is running the lead

on this investigation of this incident in Apex today

With that I will open it up if there are

any questions for me about this Chief Armstrong

Do we know if the FBI he or she just

happened to be there Were they there for some type

of investigation I don't know the answer to that

I'm not aware of them being there for any type

of investigation but we don't we don't know exactly the

reason for that

As far as witnesses on the scene I have witnesses

have been able to give you guys any detailed information

that you able to glean from that

So we're still out there talking to witnesses

And so you know there were some people that were

out in the area and of course we were caution

if anybody was there that did see anything that left

before we were able to get there talk with them

We would definitely ask them to reach out to us

and let us know

But there were some people in the parking lot I

don't know what they saw and what they didn't see

As I said investigators are still out there right now

combing through all of that and looking for people to

talk to to get more information about this

It's sorry to be redundant

Uh Apex Police Department will be handling this investigation and

not the FBI
