SANFORD, N.C. — A drive-by shooting in Sanford wounded three young people Tuesday evening, and the mother of one of the victims said she believes the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.

"The kids who got hit, it wasn't meant for them. They're good kids. They don't bother nobody," said the woman, who didn't want to be identified.

She said she was inside her home when the shooting occurred near the corner of Hall and Makepeace Streets.

"A car comes down this street, stops [nearby] and shoots this direction and drives off," she said. "I was in bed, and I heard the shots, and I knew there were kids out there, but in this area, you hear them all the time."

Witnesses said 19-year-old Jacquan Tion Burroughs, 20-year-old Ishois Trey Times and 16-year-old Kaniyah Lavelle Wooten were simply standing on Hall Street talking to a neighbor when a car pulled up and someone inside opened fire.

"The people next door, I saw them hit the ground, and everybody was running back into their house," said Larry Clegg, who lives nearby.

Burroughs is studying criminal justice at a community college and plans to enlist in the Army, Times is a college football player and Wooten is a high school student.

Wooten was treated at a nearby hospital and released Tuesday night.

Burroughs and Times were in stable condition at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill on Wednesday.

No arrests have been made, and Sanford police have released few details about their investigation.
