Veteran honored for saving man from fiery Middlesex crash
On Monday, a good Samaritan in Nash County was honored for pulling a man from a burning vehicle.
Posted — UpdatedOn Aug. 18, Ben Matthews, a retired Air Force veteran, saved a man from a fiery crash in Middlesex before the local fire department could arrive. Crews who responded to the scene said Matthews potentially saved the man's life.
Instead, the driver walked away with minor injuries. Matthews was unhurt.
At 5 p.m. Monday, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey presented Matthews with a Heroism Award for his selfless act at the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department.
Also while in Nash County, Causey will attend Monday night’s meeting of the Rocky Mount City Council, where he will present the Rocky Mount Fire Department with a Class 1 rating, the highest rating a fire department can receive.
