DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting on Thursday morning.

Police arrived in the 800 block of Park Avenue just after 8 a.m. to find a man dead.

On Friday, police identified the man as Jose Manuel Caceres-Murillo. He was 64 years old.

Residents were upset – not only because of crime scene tape around their neighborhood, but because they have seen scenes like this around this area before.

Camryn Smith, who lives nearby, told WRAL News, “Since I have been here, there have been about four to five incidents over the decade that I can remember that stick in my mind where it has been very traumatizing.”

Smith’s home is very near where officers concentrated their investigation.

"I love my community," says Smith. "This is just gut-wrenching."

Smith has a few thoughts on why these shootings continue to happen.

"A lot of it is tied to wealth inequality. When people don't have what they need, they turn to alternative methods to actually survive," says Smith.

There have been seven homicide deaths in Durham already this year.

WRAL News tried to talk to several residents living in the area. Some were too afraid for their safety to comment on camera.

Park Avenue was closed between Lathrop and Holloway streets while investigators looked for clues. As of Thursday evening, they had not released any information about possible suspects.
