U.S. Sen. Richard Burr announced Monday he will miss this week of votes when the Senate returns to Washington, D.C. as he recovers at home from hip replacement surgery.

Burr, who is the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, released the following statement:

“As the Senate returns to Washington, I will unfortunately miss this week of votes as I am home in North Carolina recovering from hip replacement surgery,” the Republican senator wrote. “The procedure was successful and I’m doing well.

“I’ll be closely monitoring votes during my absence and look forward to rejoining my colleagues in Congress next week.”

In the Nov. 8 election, Republican Ted Budd and Democrat Cheri Beasley are vying for the U.S. Senate seat held by Burr.
