GARNER, N.C. — Both directions of U.S. Highway 70 in Garner were closed between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday while crews cleared an acidic substance from the road.

According to the Garner Fire Department, a five-gallon bucket of acid fell off of a vehicle and spilled near White Oak Road and Jones Sausage Road. The acid reacted with the asphalt and put off a small plume.

No one was injured.

A hazardous materials team applied a chemical to neutralize the acid.

One turn lane was still closed at 10:45 a.m., but both directions of U.S. 70 had reopened.
