CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — President Joe Biden said Thursday night he is optimistic that cookouts with friends and family will be possible by the 4th of July.

For many people, his message provided a sense of hope that normalcy is around the corner.

Biden said, in order to get to that point, people need to continue getting vaccinated, wearing masks and social distancing. He also said every adult in the U.S. will be eligible to get a vaccine by May 1.

Dr. David Wohl, an infectious disease specialist at UNC Health, said, despite the vaccinations and improving data, we shouldn't let our guard down if we want to achieve the president's goal by summer.

"I’m a little worried that there has been some laxity," Wohl said. "I don’t want there to be the wrong message with the CDC guidance, with what the governor is doing. We still have to be really careful ... keep masking and getting vaccinated. There is a hope that, by the middle or end of this year, we could see people gathering without masks."

In an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist College poll released Thursday, 30% of respondents said that they would not get a vaccine when it is available to them. Among Republicans, that number leapt to 41%.
