The Class of 2021 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will have the option of an in-person commencement ceremony with up to two guests in attendance. Graduates and families will hear from two of the biggest names in the coronavirus pandemic.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who has been the face of the coronavirus response in the United States, and Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, a Carolina alumna who has been involved in COVID-19 vaccine research and development, are scheduled to speak.

Both will appear virtually.

Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz sent a notification about spring commencement to students on Thursday.

Because of the pandemic, UNC-Chapel Hill will host smaller, outdoor graduation ceremonies at Kenan Stadium over three days on the weekend of May 14-16. Fauci and Corbett will speak at each. Tickets will be required, and students must register their interest in attending one of the in-person ceremonies by March 18.

All ceremonies will be available via livestream for those who prefer to attend virtually, Guskiewicz said.

The university is planning a reunion event in October for members of the Class of 2020, who missed out on traditional graduation events because of the coronavirus.
