CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The leading scorer on the University of North Carolina women's basketball team has asked for and gotten permission to talk to other teams about a transfer.

UNC officials said Tuesday that rising junior Allisha Gray would explore playing for another team.

"I love Allisha Gray and all the wonderful things she brings to our program," North Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "My hope is that she makes a decision that is best for her and her family."

Gray averaged 15.8 points and 7.6 rebounds, making the all-Atlantic Coast Conference first team as the Tar Heels reached the NCAA Sweet 16.

The 6-foot guard from Sandersville, Ga. is the third member of UNC's top-ranked 2013 recruiting class to transfer, joining Diamond Deshields and Jessica Washington.

Her move comes amid uncertainty on the Tar Heel team about any penalties the NCAA will impose, and the answer to that question could be months away.

In a notice of allegations June 4, the NCAA found the university lacked institutional control for a period of 18 years when the then-Department of African and Afro-American Studies offered classes that never met and manipulated grades for those who enrolled. Of 169 student-athletes who benefited from the scheme, eight were women's basketball players, and a former counselor for that team was mentioned specifically by the NCAA and fired by UNC.

If the NCAA process unfolds along the expected timeline, it could be the end of basketball season before the Tar Heels learn their punishment.
